Which Museums to cut???

I need opinions!

I have not indulged in the museums of New York on my last two trips and hope to make up for it this time. Unfortunately, I have too many on my list!

Of course The Met is a must, other than that I have listed~

~Morgan Library and Museum (interested because I read that it has alot of books)

~Whitney Museum

~Museum of the City of New York

~A.M.N.H

~MOMA

~Brooklyn Museum and even up to Queens to see the panorama. (planning to spend a day in Brooklyn)

Also wanted to tour the Tenement Museum and Merchants House Museum since they are nearby to one another.

I am not really ';arty'; and find history and artifacts the most interesting. What would you suggest I cut? I will be in town Wednesday March 4th to late Tues. March 10th. Mondays seem to find most places closed which puts a little wrinkle in there.

Also, (sorry) wondering if you can take pictures at all of these museums???

THANKS SO MUCH!!!!

Which Museums to cut???

MOMA is open on Monday and closed on Tues. If you want to go to Tenement mus. you should reserve in advance online. I can%26#39;t say which you should drop. Based on your interests, I%26#39;d consider dropping AMNH but others will disagree. Whitney is all art so that%26#39;s another to question.

Which Museums to cut???

What special exhibitions are running during the time of your stay may help you whittle down the list a bit. I used that criterion to decide I%26#39;m taking out-of-town guests to the Whitney this weekend rather than MOMA.

Having suggested how you might pare back your list, I%26#39;ll add to it: the Rubin Museum in Chelsea. It%26#39;s a small but terrific gem -- and one of the few museums open on Mondays. The ';Colors and Light: Embroidered Textiles of India %26amp; Pakistan'; is wonderful and still available at the time of your visit.

I%26#39;m a huge fan of the New York Historical Society, and the Slavery in New York permanent installation, which had its genesis in an extraordinary special exhibition in 2006-2006, is quite noteworth imo:

Out of your list, I visited these on my last trip:

- Museum of City of New York

- Tenement Museum

- Merchants House Museum

- Morgan Library

Based on your what you said you liked, I would do them in the order above.

None of these are overly arty. At the Museum of City of NY do not miss the timescapes movie (25 mins). The Morgan Library does have books but they are out of reach - either housed behind glass cabinets or too high for you to touch. As a book lover I found this painful - LOL.

Just to make your decision even harder I would like to add the Cloisters and Frick Collection to you list. They were both excellent.

If you%26#39;re not particularly arty, I would cut the Whitney. It%26#39;s modern art, like MOMA, and MOMA is just wonderful so you can%26#39;t cut that. ;)

Again, I%26#39;d like to add to your list - the Frick Collection. The house and the man are just as interesting as the art. I love it.

The Morgan Library is stunning - some of their exhibitions are quite good and varied, like the one that just closed about Babar drawings. They might also have their Gutenberg bible on view.

Again, if you%26#39;re going to the Met, I might suggest cutting the Brooklyn Museum on this trip. It%26#39;s terrific and has a great Egyptian collection, but contains similar %26#39;stuff%26#39; to the Met.

I really enjoy the Museum of the City of NY.

If you like history and artifacts, then you should definitely cut MoMA and the Whitney. You should however, consider adding the Frick Collection.

I%26#39;d also ADD the public library on 42nd street which is FREE and has some great exhibits. The NY Historical society would be a good substitute for AMNH and the Historical society is open FREE Fridays 6-8 and is not as crowded as MOMA during Free time. The Morgan is FREE Fridays 7-9 and the Rubin Fridays 7-10 --- I hope you don%26#39;t have Friday show tix.

Look up each and see what the current exhibitions are.

My personal favorites on your list are The Museum of the City of New York, the Met, and MOMA -- but the Brooklyn Museum is open late and FREE on the first Sat of each month -- It%26#39;s a zoo but it%26#39;ll be a great way to end your day in Brooklyn.

I trust you will be using a 7 day MetroCard to get to all of these places.

When I first read this thread I didn%26#39;t have the courage to say it but now I see others that agree ..... cut the Whitney and MoMA. In addition, I think the %26#39;Tenement Museum%26#39; is also a miss but I know there are fans here and you did say you like history.

But add the %26#39;Cloisters%26#39;.

The Cloisters is beautiful and fascinating ... a must do, unless if you spend a great deal of time poking around museums, churches, and ancient abbeys in Europe.

The Whitney is very ';edgy';. Even if you do not enjoy art museums, you might find it a novelty.

Most of the museums do not permit photography. You should be able to get this information on their websites.

I agree with the consensus. cut Whitney, MOMA. I%26#39;d even cut the Brooklyn Museum. AMNH is good if you like science, taxonomy and biology, but not exceptional for history.

You will LOVE the Panorama, and make sure you check out the exhibits on the two 1939 and 1964 World%26#39;s Fairs. Fun items and factoids.

BTW, I think that some parts of the main branch of the NY Library are currently off limits for asbestos or lead removal, or something like that.

';You will LOVE the Panorama';

LOL ..... So I see you got your %26#39;fix%26#39; in today QB. But come on ..... next time ..... choose a New Years resolution !!!!!
