My shopaholic husband (yes you read that part right!) has decided that the trip to Woodbury Common should be one of the first things on our itinerary... To use his quote ';once we have been there we will know how many other souveniars we can fit in the suitcase';.
I would be grateful if someone could tell me whether the sales tax is added to the total bill for example if you buy 2 or 3 items and the total comes to over $110 or whether it is added to the individual items. I hope I have explained that clearly enough!
Thanks in advance. LK
Sales TaxThere is no sales tax on CLOTHING /Shoes that are under $110 each. This is true in NYC and this is true in NYState. Sometimes, local municipalities DO charge local sales tax. (I do not know what the story is in woodbury Commons) Understand that other items--regardless of cost ARE subject to sales tax. So, if you buy souveniars, electric items, toys etc. they WILL be taxed regardless of value. Also, if you buy an item for $112 ALL of the $112 is subject to tax, not just the $2 over. ( which I always think is unfair!!)
Sales TaxTo quote from GWB--
';The tax is calculated per item, not total. 1,000 shirts that cost $100 each will produce no sales tax, but one shirt that costs $111 will require that tax be paid.';

Crans, thank you very much that is really helpful.
To add to what rdglady said, sales tax can be composed of three parts (as it is in New York City): the tax imposed by the state, the tax imposed by the local municipality, and the tax imposed by a metropolitan transportation district that includes some cities and counties, but excludes others.
As Woodbury Commons is in New York State, but not New York City, you would pay state sales tax but not city sales tax. You might also pay local sales tax, and I do not know whether or not Woodbury falls within the metropolitan district for the extra, transportation-focused tax. In any case, the tax rate may not be the same there that it is here.
Also be aware that New York City does not tax any purchase of clothing, regardless of the price. The tax you pay on items of clothing that cost more than $110 apiece is the state and metropolitan district tax -- and you would certainly find at least the state tax in Woodbury.
Finally, be aware that if you go to Jersey Gardens, which is in the state of New Jersey, none of the above applies: when you are in another state, the taxation system can be as different as being in another country.
FYI the sales tax at Woodbury Commons is 8.125% on everything.
Thanks GWB! And I thought it was confusing when Gordon Brown reduced VAT in the UK!!
