Foot or Tour bus

Hi

My wife and I are visiting New York this coming April. We are trying to decide whether to buy tour bus tickets (Hop on hop off) or travel by foot. Any ideas?

We are thinking that it might be best by foot as we are only in New York for five days and so it might be best to go to each attraction directly.
