We`re going to be in NYC for a ten day trip in June and while I know there`s plenty to see and do in NY the entire ten days, my wife really wants to spend a day in Philadelphia seeing Independence Hall and Eastern State Penitentiary. What train from what station would be the most convenient for making the day trip (we`re staying at the Marriott Brooklyn Bridge)? And once in Philly, any suggestions on transportation to the prison, to Indepence Hall and then back to the station. Thanks in advance.
Day trip to Philly
The most straightforward train route is Amtrak from Penn Station.

But there are also several bus lines you could take; they are cheaper than the train:

Or you could take a NJ Transit train to Trenton, then change to a SEPTA train to Philadelphia, but I%26#39;d do either Amtrak or a bus instead.

I belive that your hotel is by the World Trade Center, so i would take the path to Newark and then either Amtrak or New Jersey Transit/Septa combo to Philly. Another option witch I find to be a verry pretty Ride is the Riverline to Camden and then the PATCO to Philly. I would also reccomend seeing a ballgame while there.

I`m thinking the train would the way to go. I know our 8 yr old would think it`d be pretty cool. Probably won`t make it to a Phillies game as we`re going to two Yankees/Nationals games. I personally would love to...wife and daughter will probably be a little burned out on taking in another game though! Once in Philly, how close would the prison and Independence Hall be to eone another? Cab would ideal.
Independence Hall is on 6th and Chestnut while the prison is on N 22nd between Brow and Fairmount. A cab would be your best option
That Should be Brown
Thanks AERULES. Amtrak fare looks pretty reasonable too. I would assume both the prison and Ind. Hall are close to the train station in Philly?
If you take the Septa train into Philadelphia you will arrive at the Market East Station which is at 10th and Market, about 5 blocks from the Independence Hall Visitor%26#39;s Center. From there you can take the phlash bus which has stops on the Ben Franklin Parkway and at the Art Museum, either of which would be a short walk to Eastern States.

If you take Amtrak you will arrive at 30th Street Station (30th and Market) and can get a Septa train from there to Market East.
Depends on the train Station. For indepndece hall you would have to get off Amtrak at 30th st. and take the SEPTA 2 stops to Market East. and then walk depending on how you get out of the mall one block south and 3 blocks east. And then you have to probaly take a subway/bus combo to the Prison.
Aerules is mistaken about the location of your hotel in NYC (it%26#39;s in Brooklyn, Aerules, near the Jay Street-Borough Hall subway station), but has given you correct information about everything on his side of the Hudson ;o)
Although not the cheapest, by far the easiest thing to do is to take the Amtrak train to Philly from New York Penn Station. The trip is comfortable and fairly quick, and the view as you go into Philly along the Schuylkill, with the Art Museum and the boat houses (sit on the left side of the train going down, and the right side coming back) is really spendid.
If you do take Amtrak, at 30th Street Station in Philly take the Market-Frankford line subway towards Center City and Frankford, and get out at 5th Street -- you will be right in front of Independence Hall. I would take a taxi to the Eastern State Penetentiary from there. After that, you could walk over to the Art Museum, and then go down the Parkway (by foot or taxi) past the Cathedral to City Hall, where you can get the Market-Frankford line back to 30th Street.
I appreciate the replies, thanks. I want to make the trip as easy as possible so it looks like Amtrak is the way to go and it`s only $225 for the three of us. Pretty simple...A or C train from the hotel to Penn Station and catch the Amtrak.
