Federal Holiday 19th Jan

Hi,

I%26#39;d appreciate some info here. I notice that you have Martin Luther King day on the 19th of Jan and this is a federal holiday. Will this have any impact on seeing the sites, shopping etc? Would this be a good or bad day to visit the outlet mall??

Many thanks in advance for any infomation.

Federal Holiday 19th Jan

Banks and post offices are closed and many kids have the day off from school so museums that attract kids (ie Mus. of Natural History) may be more crowded. Outlet mall might be more crowded but otherwise you shouldn%26#39;t see a big difference.

Federal Holiday 19th Jan

Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend tends to bring the best, biggest and most comprehensive sales.

There will be huge sales at Woodbury Common.

You%26#39;ll find lots of good sales all over the place.

With the exception of banks and post offices, everything will be open. It is a three day weekend for office workers and students but otherwise everything is open and operational.

Yeah, here in the US, we have this tendency to celebrate our greatest leaders by honoring them with a day of special discounts and bargains at the mall!

(no, really, im serious. you might even catch some advertisements for a president%26#39;s day weekend (washington/lincolns birthdays) sell-a-thon at some car dealerships. nothing like someone in an abe lincon beart touting ';four score and seven dollars down!'; or a Washington imitator stating ';I cannot tell a lie... these %26#39;08 Civics have got to go!';)

Not all offices are closed for Martin Luther King day and I know most of my friends will be working. The best sales are on Presidents Day weekend which is a Federal Holiday and everything is closed except for the malls and stores.

Actually, the Federal holiday in February is Washington%26#39;s Birthday.

Well, fine, if you%26#39;re getting technical.

But then I%26#39;m required to note that more than a few states, including New Jersey and Connecticuit, officially have Lincoln%26#39;s Birthday separately recognized as a state holiday.

Further, since the early 1980%26#39;s, the holiday has been promoted and often refered to as ';Presidents%26#39; Day'; in recognition of both Washington and Lincoln. In fact, the observed date of ';Washington%26#39;s Birthday'; this year falls squarely between Lincoln%26#39;s Birthday and Washington%26#39;s Birthday.

Car commercials don%26#39;t lie!

The State of New York also observes two separate and distinct holidays, named ';Washington%26#39;s Brithday'; and ';Lincoln%26#39;s Birthday';. Just as there is no such thing as a federal holiday called ';Presidents Day';, there is no such thing as a New York State holiday called ';Presidents Day';. To use that term is not only incorrect, but it also works against the whole purpose of the holiday: to specifically commemorate George Washington, who was a truly great man.

I never said it was the according to hoyle name -- i just said that%26#39;s what it%26#39;s been popularly referred to for quite some time.
