Top 10 places to visit in NYC in March 2009

I grew up in NYC(34 yrs) and now live in Houston(since 2000). I%26#39;m going back to NY in late march and want to take my wife to places we%26#39;ve never been to in NYC. We%26#39;ve never been to Top of Rock, atlantic city(nj), Bway plays and wonder what are the top 10 destinations to see in NYC for the readers?

I grew up in the east village and I guess took NYC for granted and now that i%26#39;m away, really miss NY.

Top 10 places to visit in NYC in March 2009

Everyone has different personal Top 10%26#39;s, but a good place to start is with our list of must-see%26#39;s and must-do%26#39;s, found here:

Having grown up in the East Village, you might be interested in the number of people who responded to Eater%26#39;s ';best restaurant neighborhood'; poll with your home turf:

I sure wouldn%26#39;t consider Atlantic City a must see. I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;re looking for the top 10 for tourists but maybe things that were either not here or have changed drastically in the last 8 yrs. or things you didn%26#39;t do b/c you lived here.

Ellis Island?

Tenement Museum on the lower east side (major changing area)

walk the Brooklyn Bridge from Brooklyn to NYC

Williamsburgh Brooklyn big changes

Intrepid air %26amp; space museum recently reopened

new Museum of Art %26amp; Design at Columbus Circle--the Time Warner building at Columbus Circle is great. Get dressed up and go for a drink in the lobby lounge of the Mandarin Oriental on the 35th floor. Visit Dizzy%26#39;s Coca Cola for jazz also in the building.

Have you ever gone to the Cloisters?

Chelsea Market?

Lots of new buildings in Chelsea and the east village. Check out the new Cooper Square hotel.

Top ten lists are difficult because people%26#39;s tastes are so different. For example, some people want to catch the Knicks, and others want to visit the Met. Many want to do both.

Also, top ten lists often lead to ';post-card'; touring, where nothing is seen or learned, but you get to ';check-off'; the site. You really can%26#39;t do the MET in 20 minutes.

Anyway, here are some highlights that you may enjoy, in no particular order.

1. Broadway. We have lots of shows both on and off Broadway. Note that many are closing so make sure the play will still be running.

2. Restaurants. There is no excuse for eating badly in NYC. There are tons of restaurants from the fancy and expensive to the cheap. Personally, I%26#39;d check out some of the better ethnic restaurants. They are usually cheap and good.

3. Greenwich Village/Soho. Leave your guidebook in the room and just wander around. Both East and West Villages offer great shopping, dining and fun.

4. Parks. New York has some amazing parklands. Of course there are the Olmstead gems of Central Park and Prospect Park. But, there are also lesser known sites such as the Cloisters in Upper Manhattan and Wave Hill in the Bronx.

5. Museums. We got lots. If you like art, hit the MET, Frick, MOMA, Guggenheim, Whitney and various others. If you like TV, there is the Museum of Television and Broadcasting. If you are interested in history check out Ellis Island or the Tenement Museum. Oh yeah, we also have the Museum of Sex.

6. Talk to New Yorkers. Go to a pub and meet us. Share some laughs. Buildings are great, but what makes New York is the people who live here.

7. Take a boatride. The Staten Island Ferry is free and is thus the best cheap date on the planet. Circle Line has been getting raves for their round the island trip. For those landlubbers, check out the newly reopened Intrepid.

8. Escape from Manhattan. Walk across the Bridge and head into Brooklyn. Check out DUMBO or Brooklyn Heights. Dine in Smith Street. Walk around elegant Park Slope. Head to Jackson Heights and see the diversity that makes this city great. Get some Italian food on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. See the Tibetan Museum in Staten Island.

9. Be true to yourself. Know what you want to do, and don%26#39;t feel that you have to do everything or any particular thing. A nice walk with your wife in Central Park followed by a pretzel on the street is a wonderful thing indeed.

10. Don%26#39;t stress it and have fun.

Was the South Street Seaport even there when you were in NYC? You might want to spend an afternoon there.
