18 year old in bars

Can anyone advise us whether our 18 year old daughter will be able to go into bars with us? We are more specifically thinking about those that have live music perhaps in the Greenwich Village area. If so, are there any recommendations?

Is it a good idea to stay in the Greenwich Village area or nearby rather than in Midtown?

Many thanks

Why oh why do Brits always want to take their kids into bars. People on this site have answered this question several dozen times. Here we go again.

If a bar serves food as a major component, your 18 year old daughter will likely be allowed in, but will not be allowed to drink. Her admission is discretionary according to the individual policy of the premises.

If the bar is more of a drinking establishment, your daughter will not be able to enter.

Places with music are generally more okay - jazz bars and the like. Cafe Wha allows people under 18, I%26#39;m pretty sure.

It depends on the individual establishment - there%26#39;s no law against them being there, but some places find it easier to card at the door so they don%26#39;t need to worry about ID%26#39;ing for each drink.

I always ask.. Why oh why does the USA have the highest drinking age in the world?...

and so many 20 somethings that abuse it because it is demonized from birth until the age of 21 instead of teaching responsibility and not making it a big deal like the rest of the world.

Many thanks for your reply kateoz.

BrooklynMel, with respect, I do not consider my 18 year old daughter to be a %26#39;kid%26#39;. She and I are well aware she cannot drink alcohol in the city - all I was trying to do was establish whether she was able to enter a bar with us, have a soft drink and listen to some music!

When I was young the drinking age in NY was 18. It was raised to 21 because our young folks ALSO drive and they have the worst records for accidents at that age so the drinking age was raised.
