I know people that have stayed there and I briefly saw the guest room, it looked a little more spacious than your average New York City hotel. I vaguely remember the room was on a higher floor and had a better view than the average mid-scale hotel view (the average view looks at another building three feet away).

The location couldn%26#39;t be better. You%26#39;re very close to Grand Central. You have the 4,5,6,7 and Shuttle to Times Square all very close by.

For the East Village, you have the M15 bus (frequent service, alternate buses make Limited Stops) around the corner.

Good restaurants nearby. 2nd Avenue has alot of fun, young, residents oriented restaurants. Third Avenue has some more corporate oriented venues. Docks is a seafood restaurant on Third and 40th. The nice thing about the Eastgate is that it is sort of on the border of corporate and residential. Immediately north and you%26#39;re in the heart of Midtown. South and east and you%26#39;re in the heart of a high-end residential neighborhood.

You don%26#39;t mention what season however there is a beautiful outdoor space on the Northwest corner of 40th and Third. It isn%26#39;t the easiest to find. It is a beautiful open rooftop space with nice views of the hussle and bussle (sp?) below. The stairs are set in from Third Avenue a few feet north of 40th Street. It is open to the public and very popular with office workers at lunch time.

I will be staying at the Eastgate Towers in March. I am curious about what you said regarding the travel from Grand Central and taking the Shuttle to Times Square. Is that a bus or the subway? Also, is it possible to plan subway routes from Grand Central before getting to NYC so we are not quite so ';lost';?

Thanks, ISN

The Times Square shuttle is a subway train indicated by an S on the subway map.

You can absolutely plan subway (and bus) trips in advance with the help of

hopstop.com

There%26#39;s also a crosstown bus on 42 st. that will take you from Grand Central to Times Square. It%26#39;s a lot slower but you get to see more and it is a vacation. ;)

PS Depending on how many people you are and what kind of metrocard you buy, it can sometimes be cheaper to take a taxi for short trips. ;)

There will be 3 or 4 of us traveling together. I am still trying to figure out the cheapest way and have heard about the 7 day metrocards. Are they unlimited riding?

Thanks for the links! I will be reviewing them and trying to find the best way to get from site to site as we decide what we want to do. Last year when I went with my kids we spent most of our time in and around Timesquare so I am hoping to branch out and see more things. We will be there longer (6 nights) but they are still tring to decide exactly what they want to do. They are so enthralled with Timesquare that is all they talk about seeing AGAIN!! How do I convince them to see more??? LOL!

Yes, but each person must have his/her own card and they%26#39;re $25 each for unlimited rides for a week. For 4 of you, that%26#39;s $100 and for some trips, as I said, taxis for 3 or 4 might cost the same as subway. The other options are:

to buy 1 or 2 ';pay as you go'; metrocards that can be used by several people and refilled

OR

if you think you%26#39;ll be spending a lot of time in midtown with walking distance of your hotel, only buying a day fun pass for $7 which allows you unlimited rides in any given day. This explains the differences

Most people who buy 7 day unlimited metrocards wind up feeling it was money well spent b/c you then don%26#39;t have to think about anything, just get in a bus or subway. But I actually think unless you do a lot of riding around, it%26#39;s probably more than most people need.

By planning activities in other areas that they would like--or better yet, give them the task of finding something new they haven%26#39;t seen before that they would like. I don%26#39;t know if they%26#39;re male or female or what their interests are but the village and the lower east side and Soho are all areas that teens would like.
