Hotels near Woodside, NY

Hi

My boyfriend %26amp; I are visitning New York from the 11th to 15th of Sept and are staying with friends in Woodside. We%26#39;re on our way home from Australia so my sister %26amp; husband are meeting us in NY, haven%26#39;t seen them in months. They%26#39;ll be there from 8th to 15th Sept and would like to stay in a nice hotel for the week but ideally someplace close to Woodside so it%26#39;ll be easy for us to meet up.

As I%26#39;ve never been to NY before I would really appreicate suggestions of a hotel or an area which would be good for them to stay in %26amp; close to us.

I%26#39;ve checked the hotels in Woodside, there%26#39;s 2 %26amp; neither have recieved good reviews.

Any advice would be great!

Many Thanks

Jose

Woodside is in northwestern Queens. Historically, it was part of the Town of Newtown, but for reasons known best to the US Postal Service, all former communities in Newtown were divided betwen the main post offices for Flushing and for Long Island City.

The reason I am bothering you with this arcana is that any hotel that is within the Long Island City postal district (that is, any address with a zip code starting 110__) is close to Woodside,a nd everything within the western portions of the Flushing postal district (zip codes begining 113__) is also close to Woodside. Some of the community names which may be used are Sunnyside, Long Island City, Elmhurst, Astoria, and Flushing. If you look for a hotel, then, you should search for ALL of those communities.

For purposes of travel into town, you wold do well to look for hotels handy to subway lines. This would then include all the hotels in downtown Flushing near Main Street (you can get to Woodside VERY easily from there on the #7 subway), as well as the hotels handy to Queens Boulevard (such as the Pan American or the La Quinta.)

I%26#39;m dividied on this one.

On the one hand, it is very important to support Woodside economically right now because some of the area was one of the neighborhoods that suffered terribly in the recent #$@$!%26amp; power blackout. (Hope your friends didn%26#39;t suffer!)

The La Quinta is in Woodside, but YOUARETHISCLOSE to the elevated rail tracks of the subway. Very convenient, but could be noisy.

Or, your sis and bro-in-law could stay at the Comfort Inn in Long island City (another area hit by the blackout), right near the 23rd Street-Ely Avenue subway station on the E and V lines.

On the other hand, what do you all want to accomplish by staying near each other in Woodside? Is this just for commuting and sight-seeing together? Or will you all be hanging out at your friends%26#39; house a lot?

If none of you have been to NYC before, I%26#39;d suggest that your sis and bro-in-law splurge and stay in Manhattan. That way, you%26#39;ll have a swanky hotel room in Manhattan to use as a home base in the city, esp if you stay out late or want a shorter commute. Maybe split the cost with them?

For example, what about the Grand Hyatt on 42nd Street/Grand Central Terminal? Try to get it on Priceline - I%26#39;ve read some pricing success stories about that one. It is directly above the #7 line subway stop at Grand Central, which is the same line you take to Woodside.

No matter what, you are doing a good deed by supporting small businesses in western Queens. Even buying some gum and a newspaper will help!

I agree with QB-tell them to stay in manhattan-staying near woodside ,while it may be convenient and close to your friends house, its kind of far from everything else

Well, I love my natives but I have to suggest that Jose is hoping to find some time to spend with the family rather than so much with the mortar and bricks of our fair city. So if I can read between the lines, it is the family connection that is more significant than the lights of Manhattan.

To that end, I would suggest La Quinta, 3718 Queens Blvd

Long Island City, NY 11101. It%26#39;s in the area known as Long Island City and is 2 blocks from the 40th Street stop on the number 7 line on the subway. There are busses that stop almost in front of the La Quinta that would get you to Woodside in 10-15 minutes. Or if you take the number 7 line, it is like 2-4 stops which is a breeze.

There is a McDonald%26#39;s right next door, which may or may not be good news, but there it is. It is certainly not a horrible choice but you will not be in danger at all, it just a little void of life in the absolute immediate area. It is new and clean and nearby the kind of easy transportation that will make it easy for you to get together.

BTW, QB did you know that ConEd is reimbursing regular folk who were put out with a no-questions-no receipts ';food spoilage'; payback of $350 if you were in one of the affected %26#39;hoods? Bring your ConEd bill to the brand spanking new Con Ed office on QB in Sunnyside next to the Washington Mutual branch off the 46th St stop of the 7.

[If I should have used ';effected'; please help] {distraction}

Thank you for your replies they are really helpful %26amp; give me an idea of where we will be located %26amp; areas close by that they can chose.

The reason I had asked for a hotel close by for my sister %26amp; brother-in-law is that we%26#39;ll be doing stuff together each day, going out together at night etc so it makes sense that we%26#39;re close, although I understand what you%26#39;re saying about Manhatten. The people we are staying with are friends of my boyfriends that he wants to catch up with, we won%26#39;t be hanging out in their house but again will probably go out with them in the evening.

During the day we will be doing the usual touristy things but at nite we%26#39;ll be going for dinner %26amp; drinks.

I might suggest to my sister that they stay in Manhatten until we arrive on the 11th %26amp; then stay out nearer to Woodside, somewhere around Long Island.

Staying ';around Long Island'; is NOT a good idea. There%26#39;s very limited public transportation there and no decent hotels near the Queens border. You need to find out what the nearest subway stop is to your friends house where you%26#39;ll be staying. Then we can help.

Imo, Woodside is really a silly place to expect your family to stay. There are no decent hotels. It%26#39;s mostly a place where people live, many of whom work in Manhattan. They should stay in Manhattan near the subway line that services your location.

I agree, stay in Manhattan. The La Quinta and Comfort Inn in LIC are close to Manhattan anyway, so you might as well stay in Manhattan where there is more to do. The subway trip is not too long, though as someone said Woodside is big and you may not be near a subway but the La Quinta and Comfort Inn wouldn%26#39;t be convenient as well if they are not near a subway.

Hee..Hee! I think ';Long Island City'; was what he meant. Before I moved out to Queens I also thought they were the same thing.

I also think that staying in Woodside could be a lot of fun, particularly if the main goal is to spend time with family. Getting in and out of the city is not much of a chore from there, and it will give them the opportunity to see parts of New York that not everybody sees.

But where would you propose they stay cbcito? If they stay in LIC, what%26#39;s the point? It%26#39;s still a subway ride from Woodside. What%26#39;s gained? If they have to get on a subway, it might as well be to the city. I don%26#39;t know where the sister %26amp; husband are traveling from and I understand wanting to spend time together, but staying in a Comfort Inn on the side of a major highway is not my idea of a good time.
