This isn%26#39;t a real travel question. But everyone here is so helpful about info about the NYC area, I thought I would give it a try.
I%26#39;m moving to the NYC area February 7th. I%26#39;m looking to rent a furnished room for about 3-6 months. This will give me time to find the area I want to live in long term and able to look at places in person. Plus, I didn%26#39;t want to move all my stuff in the cold of February.
However, I can%26#39;t make a trip to NY before that move date. I%26#39;m looking at sublet places online.
My question is what are some decent areas to live in the NY area. I%26#39;m looking at areas in Brooklyn, Bronx, and New Jersey. I%26#39;m a single female and looking for areas that I can feel safe walking to public transporation at night, etc.
Any information would be wonderful. And include any areas that I might not have thought of.

What%26#39;s your budget? That will help us with areas you might be able to afford.
www.craigslist.com is a good place to start, but you do need to be careful of the weirdos. I%26#39;ve had friends find places there, though.

PS. There%26#39;s a chance this thread will be shut down as it%26#39;s not travel related - if so, head over to www.askanewyorker.com and post there.
I would like to go between $500 - $750 a month. I%26#39;ve wrote the other site down and will check it out.
I visit NYC all of the time but I never really take to time to learn all of the areas.
I can%26#39;t access craigslist from work. They have it blocked so I will try it at home.
Thanks
Bronx ..... Pelham, Norwood, Bainbridge
Queens ..... Elhmurst, Jackson Heights, Rego Park, Forest Hills, Sunnyside, Astoria, LIC
Brooklyn...... Williamsburg, Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights, Brightn Beach
New Jersey ..... Hoboken, Ft. Lee, Jersey City
But my wife just said; ';She can%26#39;t stay with us .... and that%26#39;s final.';
In your situation I%26#39;d book a hostel or b %26amp; b for a week or 2 and wait until you arrive to go and look at places. Another idea is to see if there%26#39;s any room at one of the women%26#39;s residences in Manhattan at least for a few weeks? Scroll to the bottom of this page for ';all women%26#39;s residences';

You should not commit to a 3 month or longer roommate situation long distance. Where will you be working????
thanks Lotuspath.
This helps alot. I can narrow down my search.
Tell your wife that I completely understand. lol
Working? Well, that%26#39;s a good question. I%26#39;m still working on that one.
I just got laid off from my job here in Memphis due to downsizing issues. The job market here in the Legal field is nonexistent. Memphis is a small job market and when the big companies are laying off, there is a problem.
I%26#39;ve always wanted to move to NYC. I%26#39;m in touch with placement agencies and the company I worked for is providing a head hunter service for free and they have a New York office. So if I can%26#39;t find permanent work, I%26#39;m hoping to find temp work in the legal field.
So I%26#39;m using my severance package to move to NYC. I know the job market is awful everywhere but there are no jobs here. And I don%26#39;t like to live off unemployment. I have to earn my way. So I%26#39;m looking at it as a grand adventure.
I will also look into the women%26#39;s residence. That is a good idea. I just don%26#39;t want it to eat too much into my savings at the beginning.
Are you a lawyer, there are plenty of different job boards specifically for lawyers? Or are you looking at paralegal and the like? If you%26#39;re a lawyer, your law school could have good contacts as well.
I have a law degree but not licensed. I was studying to take the NY bar exam in February but then I found out my position was being eliminated right before Thanksgiving. My last day at the company was Dec. 31st. So finding a job became a priority. I have a contracting job here but only for the month of January which gives me paychecks until I get my severance check.
So I%26#39;m really looking for paralegal or law clerk type work until I can take the bar in July now. I graduated from a Texas school. I%26#39;ve tried using them before but they mainly only have connections to texas jobs.
The women%26#39;s residences are really good value and offer some meals too. The Brandon on the upper west side is a good location. I would stay there or one of the other residences until you find a job. Once you%26#39;ve got the job and know where you%26#39;ll be working, THEN get the apt. or room or whatever.
