Wife %26amp; I took a cab from 33rd St. up to around 51st St. Fare was $4.90. I gave cabbie a $10 bill. Wife says I tipped too much. I told her that for a $5 cab fare 1 or 2 dollars was not enough. Comments???
Taxi %26amp; TipYou tipped too much. On a $5 fare, $2 would have been plenty. But you only overtipped by a couple of bucks, and it%26#39;s always better to overtip than undertip. Don%26#39;t worry about it.
Taxi %26amp; TipIt was an exceedingly generous tip. On a fare of $4.90, $1 would have been slightly more than 20%,a nd the standard taxi tip is 15%-20% of the fare before additions based on time of day. $6 would have been enough. Your tip was more than 100%.
I don%26#39;t typically over tip...My thought is what the heck is $1 or $2 (tip) worth in NY City...can%26#39;t even buy small bottle water for that.
That may be true, $1.00 or $2.00 doesn%26#39;t buy much in New York City but you also have to consider how much time the person spent serving you. If it was a 5 minute taxi ride and the driver is likely to have 8 - 10 fares of comparable length and value in an hour, that is approx. $15.00 in tips alone.
If everybody gave a $5.00 tip for five minutes and I could earn $50.00+ an hour in tips I%26#39;d definitely drive a taxi too.
You were generous and I%26#39;m sure the driver appreciated it. They%26#39;re not going to be making a lot of money this January and February, this is the off-season and the economy is going to pinch taxi drivers.
