My daughter and her friend are ending up in New York at the end of May after travelling the world and she is looking for somewhere to stay. Won%26#39;t have much money left by then! so does anyone know of any good hostels that they would recommend?

What is your nightly budget?
hostels in New York
I%26#39;ve stayed at the YMCA Vanderbilt - private bunk bed rooms, ~$100 per room. Very clean, terrific location.
The hostel run by the International Hostel Federation is at 103rd and Amsterdam. It%26#39;s a bit out of the way for some things but I used to do volunteer walking tours there
It will make a difference if they want a private room with shared bath or dorm rooms. For dorms, Hostelling International mentioned above is one of the best if not the best despite it not being so central. Big Apple Hostel, the YMCA Vanderbilt and YMCA Westside are good for private rooms with shared bath as is the Pod hotel.
hostelz.com
is a website with a search engine for hostels and you can choose either dorms or private rooms. They also have some reviews.
Certainly the Girshwin Hotel. They have 6 and 10 bed rooms for $35 and $45 respectively. Very funky, cool and extremely central location.

MY advice would be to make a reservation there, but keep priceline.com, hotlwire.com and quickbook.com on the radar.
Try to bid a 3* plus in NYC. It may be possible to get one for about $100 if the economy keeps having problems and for the same price as it would cost for a dormatory style room at The Girshwin.
Given your theory that they may have run out of money by this time, I%26#39;d figure out a way to set aside some money they don%26#39;t have access to for the rest of the trip since NYC is one of the most expensive places I%26#39;d guess they%26#39;re visiting. ;) Just a thought.
Thanks for your replies
i think they would like to have a private room with en-suite
I had a look at the ones you mentioned
does anyone know about the Gerswhin?
For $139 on Hotwire.com right now you can get a 3* in Central NYC. It is listed as the 3* in the Empire State Building area.
Hotel costs may come down, but that one seems to be a good value in NYC considering hostels will often cost your $50 per person.
I used dates May 29th-30th
I often find I even get hotels for 20%-30% less than Hotwire.com if I bid using priceline.com. I bet you could get a decent hotel for about $110 as I write this, however more and more are released the closer to your date usually unless there is something going on in NYC.
You can use Betterbidding.com and Biddingfortravel to see what hotels are in use by Hotwire and Priceline and what people%26#39;s winning bids have been.
They are great tools if you are on a budget. I have stayed at some very nice hotels using them, never paying over $120 in NYC.
Hope that helps.
Thanks very much ,I will check those sights.
Do you think thatthey would be better leaving the booking until nearer the time to get a bargain?
have you looked at www.chelsealodge.com for rooms?
