Hi
Looking at changing our hotel res to the new Thompson Hotel - Smyth (thanks to NYWhiz!!). But it looks like the bar %26amp; restaurant will not be open in time for our stay (28th Jan -2nd Feb), hopefully the hotel will be!!
I have had a look on google maps to see what is nearby, but i don%26#39;t recognise any of the bars names that come up, well not as ones people recommend on this forum. Is mudville%26#39;s any good, sounds like a sports bar?
Does anyone have any recommendations for bars in this area? Hopefully they will be in staggering distance of the hotel.
We like trendy and traditional bars/pubs oh and i quite like the look of the fake speakeasys.
Cheers

And they will soon open, if they haven%26#39;t already, a ';private'; lounge in the basement to supplement the existing bar scene:

Thanks for the Speedy response Crans. I have managed to cram some research into my lunch break.
Ummmm, the hotel has not yet opened so there are no reviews. If you make this change, make sure you get a very good price and I would also book a backup hotel that can be cancelled, just in case. The opening date was Jan 6. It%26#39;s now pushed to Jan. 12. We%26#39;ll see. If you are not good at being pioneers (ie ignoring some work still being done in the hotel) not sure this is a good idea. Sorry if I%26#39;m driving you crazy.
No it%26#39;s cool. We are confusing ourselves as well. As other half is suggesting we go with 6 Columbus, as at least this hotel is finished, but I am now worried this may be a boring area, after your previous comments.
We just wanted to make sure that if the Smyth was semi open then at least we would have a decent bar within walking distance of the hotel, which it looks like there will be.
Crans, thanks for posting my list! Lots of bars to choose from.
I walk by The Smyth and it is decidedly not ready to open this week. ;o) But, it looks nice!
Say, if it%26#39;s not open by end of Jan, how about the Cosmopolitan Hotel across the street?
QB, your list is so extensive it makes me wonder how you manage to keep your job!
I think 6 Columbus or the Empire would both be very good. The area around Columbus Circle is not nearly as posh and corporate as the area around the Palace imo. There%26#39;s also a part of me that says for $225/night, staying at the Palace which is really grand would be a kick but if you%26#39;re looking for pubs and speakeasys, that%26#39;s not the place to be.
Btw, wherever you stay, if you don%26#39;t mind putting on a jacket (and tie for dinner), you should go into the 21 Club at least for a drink at the bar. This is probably the most famous former speakeasy in NYC. Lots of good memorabilia at the bar.
